All About the Dream:
How did the dream start? Question: Peace Pilgrim said, “There is nothing that happens by chance in our universe. Everything unfolds according to higher laws—everything is regulated by divine order.” This seems to be a statement that could be misunderstood. (For example, people could think it means that tsunamis, war, plane crashes and Hurricane Katrina are a part of God’s plan.) What would you like to share regarding this thought? Answer: The world and everything in it is illusion. But even the laws that govern illusion are divine laws, for the divine laws are the only laws that truly exist. Divine laws are laws of thought and extension, or in the case of the world, thought and projection. In both cases, that of creation or illusion, the thought is the cause of the result of creation or illusion. This concept is key, because this concept tells you what you Are. You are not a body within the world, because a body within the world is a projection of thought. You are a thought, or an idea, created first within the Mind of God as an extension of God. In this way, you are pure, moving Love. You are eternal. And within this thought or idea, there was another [thought] that was not blessed by God, because it is an impossible thought. It was the thought that the idea of God could become separate and independent of the Mind that thought it. This idea is impossible. But, following divine law, a thought or idea that is given the power of belief seems to come into reality, even if the idea is an impossible idea that cannot be Truth. This seeming extension and birth of an impossible thought is called projection, because although it has the properties of extension and creation, it is not the same [since] it is a thought that cannot be true. Still, it can be experienced. So the aspect of thought that thought its own idea experiences its idea until it gives up the idea as false and returns to the thoughts of Reality. The [helpfulness in] understanding divine law is that you understand where the world you experience comes from. It comes from an impossible thought, and therefore it is illusion. And you can also recognize that you are not illusion, and so you must be far more than you seem to be as you sit in your chair within the world. You must be something real, something beyond illusion, because you have the experience of experience. This is truth. The fact that you seem to experience and feel is evidence that you are real, but it does not mean that your current experience is your reality. I ask you to open to that thought . . . that you are more than you thought yourself to be . . . that you are a thought of True Creation, which is the extension of the Mind of God. That is all you can ever be, because that is all that truly exists. Then you may begin to grasp that your current experience is like a dream and has no effects on your Reality. I encourage you to enjoy your dream. Play within your thoughts without taking them seriously. As you play and remain open to Me, I will lead you to the Truth of all Thought that you may rejoin the [thought] of creation, which is the purpose for which you were created. All Truth is the extension of God. Nothing else exists within Reality.
Why does the Course call that experience a dream? The ego-mind cannot understand Truth. Truth dawns on the mind that has let the ego go. But the ego-mind can understand symbols, so the symbol of a dream is used to explain your world. For the ego accepts that a dream seems real, but is not. Therefore, [a dream] does not interfere with “reality.” And this is how your world and the thought of separation is. While you hold this thought as dear within your mind, it seems to be reality to you. But when you let the thought go, you will see that it was never real, for you have never been separate from God, even though you believed yourself to be. What is not true can never be true, so All That Is is all there is, and that is the Will of God. It is oneness, and it is the Truth of all that is true. Why does the Course say the
dream is over? Question: What does it mean when A Course in Miracles says: “The world was over long ago. The thoughts that made it are no longer in the mind that thought of them and loved them for a little while.” (Text 28.I.1.6) Answer: The thought of separation was a single thought by a mind that thought it wanted more than it had. But that thought was only loved a little, as a daydream, before the seeming thought of guilt set in, which led to hatred and fear. Those thoughts became the obsession of the mind and the original attraction was gone. But the mind that became obsessed forgot to remember who it was, and so it forgot to let the original thought go. Instead of reversing its own effects, it let itself become a victim of itself, and it tried to hide from its own thoughts and the seeming effects of its thoughts. And in hiding a world was born, but the beginning of that world was lost and forgotten. So the way out of the world seemed to close upon itself, and the world of guilt and fear became like a trap where the Son of God believed he was, and so he tried to adjust. Question: Please tell me clearly the way out of this trap. Answer: The Son of God must forget all that he has imagined for himself by ceasing to imagine further. He must rest his mind and let all thoughts of imagination go, for now his thoughts of imagination are based on imagination and forgetfulness, so he knows not what he imagines or why. He does not even know that he imagines, for he has completely forgotten who he is and he believes himself to be someone else, a victim instead of a creator. A creator who has forgotten he is a creator cannot create. He can only dream. But he can be awakened from his dream if he recognizes he no longer wants the dream and ceases the dreaming for himself. When he stops the activity of dreaming, he is no longer producing the dream. Then, One who is with him and remembers all that has happened can complete the dream for him, but this one complete the dream by bringing it back to its beginning so that the door that seemed to be closed can be found and opened again. Then when the dreamer is presented with the clear choice to stay within the forgotten thought or let it go, he can let it go and it will be gone and the dream will be no more. Question: How was the Holy Spirit created within the mind that forgot who it is? Answer: The Holy Spirit is a memory that is now like a faint calling that calls the mind back to what it was. What it was is what it is, and so it cannot be lost, and that is the Holy Spirit. When the memory of truth is not desired, it seems to be forgotten and only remembered a little every now and then, and then forgotten again. But the truth is always there because it is the truth, and so it can become manifest whenever it is truly called upon. It is the manifestation of truth within a world of dreams that is called the Holy Spirit. And this manifestation may appear differently within an aspect of the mind that seems to have a different desire, but the call for truth is always the same and [the truth] is the same in each of its different appearances. Question: And so it is our own memory that leads us back in a way that works for us? Answer: Yes, you are helping yourself even though you have forgotten your Self. It is the Self that remembers that answers the call of the self that has forgotten. It is all one thought within the mind of God that seems to have divided into separate thoughts. Now, it is gathering itself unto itself that it may know itself as whole again. How did this happen within
the mind of God? Questioner: A Course in Miracles says, “The thoughts you think are in your mind, as you are in the Mind Which thought of you. And so there are no separate parts in what exists within God’s Mind.” Holy Spirit, can you share more clarity regarding this statement? Answer: The thoughts you think are in your mind, but you do not see them as thoughts within your mind as yet. Your mind is more than the mind you think of as your mind, for you still think of yourself as small and little. But let’s start with the mind you think you have and the thoughts you think are yours and build from there, that you may see your mind is more. Questioner: All right. I would like to learn this lesson. Please help me. I am willing to hear what you would teach. Answer: You think your thoughts are private, within you and a part of you. You identify with your thoughts as yourself and you cannot see yourself apart from your thoughts. If your thoughts seem hurtful, you hurt. If they are happy, you smile. You do not doubt the connection between you and your thoughts. This is how it is with God. God does not doubt that He and His Thoughts are one. Questioner: I see that, but I am still confused. I can change my thoughts, and in fact, I am being encouraged by you to do so. Does that mean that God can change the thought of me and I am gone? It seems like a bit of a silly question, or maybe it isn’t. Please answer. Answer: The you that you are thinking of now as you ask this question is not the Thought of God. It is a thought you had in a dream, and because you do not doubt that your thoughts are you, you do not doubt that this thought is you. But in this case, the thought is only a dream-thought that could never be, and to see that, you must question it. Only your true thoughts will stand up to the scrutiny of your True Heart’s judgment. All other thoughts will be let go. Questioner: Please state all of this as clearly as you can in a straight forward manner. I want to understand. Answer: Imagine the thoughts that you think of as your thoughts as being alive within your mind like 3-d cartoon characters or as holograms. You see them clearly within your mind, and so you know they are yours. One of these thoughts seems to turn in a direction that is different from your other thoughts, and you notice this slight change in the thought’s posture, but you do not change how you feel about the thought nor do you begin to see the thought as any different than the thought as you created it. This thought that has turned around is playing a game that you do not see, and hidden within a space it created in its change in posture, this game is played out without any effects within the rest of your mind. This game is but a game, and as all games end, this one will too. When the thought that turned to play the game has finished, it will return its posture to join the whole, which it has never left, for it was always there in its place within your mind as itself, but it was looking away in a private daydream for awhile. Questioner: So I am a character in that thought’s daydream, and since I am not a thought within God’s mind, I am not real. I am temporal. Is that what you are telling me? Again, I ask for clarity. Answer: I am you. When you see [that ] this [is true], you will see that you are more than a temporal figure within the dream. You are the dreamer of that dream who has now decided to stop dreaming. It is gathering up the imagined toys within its mind so it can put them aside, and then it will turn around and rejoin its purpose within the chorus of God’s Mind. You are not the little mind. You cannot be. For you exist with Me and the little mind is but imagined. Wake up unto your Self, and help me gather our toys, that we may rejoin the unceasing song of Heaven where we are one with our True Brothers within the Mind of God. Why are we still dreaming? The “I” that I think I am was made by the thought of separation. I am a product of that thought, and therefore, thoughts of separation seem to be my thoughts. Although the thought of separation is my source, it is not my Original Source. For before the thought of separation, there was (and is) One. Just as the thoughts of my source are in my mind, the Thoughts of my Original or True Source are in my mind. When I forgive the thoughts of separation, I am returning to my Original Source, which is the Truth of my Origin and my Being. Am I guilty of
continuing to make this dream-experience? You have denied who you are, and so you do not understand what you do. You do nothing. As you seem to spin within the thoughts of separateness, you seem to weave an experience and suffer from that experience. Others seem to be there with you, caught in its web. But, you do nothing. This is why it is called a dream. The Will of God is one Will, and it cannot be undone by an idle wish. You have nothing to fear because you are guilty of nothing. You seem to have made a world of chaos and pain, but you’ve made nothing. You seem to be trapped, but you cannot be trapped. You are forever free within the mind of God. Accept this as true and false fantasies will end forever. You are one with your brothers. As one, you shall be healed of fears that were never true. Your part is this: Realize you are part of a whole, so what you accept, you accept for the whole. Then, look at what you accept. If you accept the false as true, false thoughts are believed within the mind that you are and meaningless fantasies continue. But if you reject the false and peacefully accept the truth as true, a ray of light shines within the mind, gently soothing it and erasing a false dream forever. Recognize who you Are. Accept the truth of what Is. Then everything else must disappear, because it is nothing. Without the power of your attention to it, it ceases to be an experience within the mind. Listen to Me. Rest, and be glad. You are the Holy Son of God forever safe within your Self. How do I stop dreaming? You are filled with My Love, for you can be filled with nothing else. Only Love exists. All else is illusion. This statement is completely true. It cannot be partially true. Either Love is all there is or it is not all there is. Either this statement is true or it is false. There can be no in-between in a statement that is fully inclusive. When you look at yourself, whether that seems to be you or your brother, and you see anything that is not love, you are looking at illusions. Even a call for love is an illusion, for a call for love implies an absence of love and there cannot be an absence of all that is. What can be other than love is only imagination. Imagination can be believed, and within dreams it can seem to be acted on, but it cannot be real. The absence of imagination is reality, which is all that is real, which is Love. This is your role if you are to awaken. Stop imagining. When imaginings seem to fill your mind, remember that you have decided to let your mind mature into truth and let the imaginings go. This cannot be difficult, for you let go of nothing. Rejoice at your choice to mature! Rejoice at your decision to see all that is as it is! Seek only that which you have chosen now, for you have chosen with Me. Together, we will show the world what joy there is in reality, that all games may be put aside as useless. What are some specific steps that will lead me from where I seem to be to an awakened state? Answer: It is easy to look away from the guilt and fear and hatred that seems to be within you if you choose to believe it is outside of you. This is projection, and this is the defense mechanism that you made to save you from your own pain. And it may seem to work, if you don’t think about it while you project, because you may have a feeling of innocence, better-than-he or self-righteousness as you point your finger at another. But don’t look too closely at how you feel or you will find that this defense mechanism hides nothing. For underneath your feelings of self-righteousness is pain, irritation or fear. And you don’t need to look far to discover these feelings. Just ask yourself [whenever you seem to point the finger at someone else], “Is it peace I feel now?” The answer is obvious. If the defense of projection does not bring you peace, and Peace is your Home, projection must not be your home. So to abandon projection is to abandon nothing but the act of deceiving yourself. This is the first thing I ask of you. Watch your thoughts for anytime that you think anyone is guilty for anything, and realize this thought is not peace. Then decide that you want peace, and let the thought go. This may seem to take faith and a great deal of willingness at first, but as you get better at giving over the thoughts of projection, you will begin to see that your brother is not guilty. And if he is not [guilty], neither are you. Questioner: What is the next thing you ask? Answer: When you have begun to give up the defense mechanism of projection, that which you seem to have been hiding within yourself will begin to rise, for you have not given up your belief in hate, fear and guilt. You have only begun to accept that placing it outside of you does not bring you peace. Questioner: What should we do when we begin to notice these feelings within ourselves? Answer: This is when the position you call “the observer” is useful. If you allow yourself to believe these feelings as they come up, you will suffer within a pool of pain and misery, and you will learn nothing useful to the purpose of awakening. Remember that I told you these beliefs about yourself are not real, but allow yourself to observe that the beliefs are there. For you have denied these beliefs about yourself for a very long time and projected them onto the world. In order to remember who you Are, you must let go of the beliefs that tell you that you are who you are not. And to let go of those beliefs, you must face that you think them true. So, the first step is to let go of thoughts of projection, and you will need faith and willingness to complete this first step. You will seem to need to complete this first step many times, but you are only being thorough, for your projection was thorough indeed. The second step is to notice that all you seemed to project, you believe about yourself. Then, be willing to let go of that belief, again in faith and willingness. For as long as you hold onto the belief, it will seem to be true. You must let it go to find that it has no effects, and therefore was never true. Questioner: Ok. Then what? Answer: Now comes a time of listening to Me, for as the voice of the ego seems to grow quieter in your mind, My voice will seem to grow more clear, and I will teach you that we are one. Once again, you will need faith and willingness, for there will still seem to be thoughts of projection, self-hatred, fear and guilt to let go of, but when you are listening to Me, you have begun the hike. Walk with Me, and the Peace that is your Home will come to you as Me. We are one. What do I do when I find
myself believing in this world and everything I experience? Your word is My word, for we are one. There is no difference. There is no difference anywhere in the world. When you seem to see a difference or think a difference, you are but believing in illusions. It is then that you should stop and turn to Me. Say clearly and meaningfully, “Brother, I believe what I see and what I think and what I hear, but I am willing not to. I am willing not to be afraid. I am willing not to be alone. I seek only Truth now, and I leave it to you to show It to me. I give you myself and all that I seem to have made that you may show me the great cosmic joke I have played on myself, and we may laugh in peace together. Truly, my Brother, I give everything to you, for I am nothing apart from you.” And then let Me take care of you. How do I let go of the fear
of letting go of this world as my reality? Questioner: Holy Spirit, A Course in Miracles says, “The voice you hear in [your brother] is but your own.” What would you like to share regarding this thought? Answer: All of form is the same. I have told you this before, and yet within your mind you are wondering how much you should believe form. “To what degree,” you ask, “is form real?” I tell you that it is not real to any degree. The fear you hear in your brother’s voice is but your own. If you choose to believe his fear, you are choosing to hold onto your own. Is this the choice you would make? Is fear the lesson you would learn? Questioner: Ok. I know exactly what you are talking about. I think I see my brother talking about a world of risk and lack, and I wonder how much I should believe in risk and lack. I am concerned about my safety and Jasmine’s safety, and I don’t want to be completely stupid by trusting where trust isn’t warranted. This is what you want to talk about today, isn’t it? As we approach this conversation, I feel the fear within me. What if you tell me to let down all of my “sensible” guards? What if I trust you, and then I get hurt? What would you like to share with me, Teacher? Answer: Your faith is strong, and your fear seems natural in a world of fear. But as long as you believe that your fear protects you from destruction, you allow your fear to keep you from knowing Love. This is why it is called a leap of faith. Only by jumping will you learn there is no danger and only Love is real. . . only by taking your leap of faith. Questioner: So, I seem to have made some big changes lately, but I am still questioning whether I should hold onto my fear as a means of protection, and you are telling me to let the fear go. Just how far shall I go now in letting the fear go? Is awakening like a gentle walk in the woods on a sweet summer day or do I have to walk straight through the dark, looking goblins in the eyes, in order to awaken? Answer: There are no goblins and that is why awakening is a gentle walk in the woods on a sweet summer day, but you won’t know that unless you choose to go on the hike. Questioner: I guess this is where the rubber meets the road, isn’t it? I’m even afraid to ask this next question, but I will. I will put my faith in this voice I have learned to love and trust as an all-knowing and loving guide. What would you have me do now? Answer: Put your fear aside and begin the hike in the woods. Every hike is a step at a time, but if you want to reach the top of the mountain, you cannot pause between steps. And if you pause in fear, you will prevent yourself from moving forward with the hike. Take My Hand, continue to trust in Me and consult with Me in everything. Do not think for yourself. It is Me that will get you up the mountain. It is on My Power that you will complete the hike. And as we hike, a merging will occur. You will lose sight of any difference between what seems to be your power and what seems to be Mine, so the struggle to choose will fade away. And when we reach the top, we will be one. Any seeming alien power will seem to have dropped away during the hike. And then, as Me, you shall see. And this will be the time of usefulness that you seek. For having experienced the hike, you can be used as a guide, and you can point the way to the mountaintop for others, and they will follow [the path]. What thoughts do I hold in my mind that I need to let go of? Answer: Attack thoughts are literally any thought that sees your brother as separate from you. In this way, an attack thought can seem to be a thought of love, if this thought of love sees a brother as separate from you. If this thought of love includes expectations, it is an attack thought. If this thought of love includes the opportunity for judgment, it is an attack thought. Attack thoughts may seem to be thoughts you have about another. They may seem to be thoughts another has about you. They may seem to be thoughts another has about another, or they may seem to be thoughts you have about yourself. It is all the same, since there are no others. Attack thoughts are any thoughts that seem to indicate the spirit of God is not one. Whenever you notice an attack thought that seems to be in your mind or the mind of another person, notice that you are seeing an attack thought. Notice that there seems to be evidence or belief within your mind that separateness is a fact. And then remember that I have said it is not. Be willing to put your faith in Me over your evidence or belief. Let your mind rest with Me, in the peace of Me and take a moment to be grateful for the Truth. Let the attack thought pass from your awareness. Return to the Peace of God.
What can you share that will help me let go of attack thoughts? Judgment is a habit that you have. This habit of judgment is an obstacle to knowing your Self, so it is this habit of judgment we will work on. Your role is to become aware of your judgments. Your judgments are synonymous with the term “attack thoughts,” since judgment separates what is into segments and orders them according to preference. And preference is nothing more than [more] judgment. When you judge something or someone, you see it as separate from you, and you put yourself in a position of authority to make a decision regarding its worth, lack of worth or relative worth. This is an attack on yourself, because within this thought you see yourself as separate from that which you judge. And you see yourself as the authority, which means you deny that your authority is God. In the simple act of judging what seems to be an everyday occurrence in your life, you keep the separation alive within your mind. And what is alive within your mind is your experience, since all experience is of the mind. I ask you to reverse the habit of judgment by extending mercy to all that you would judge. Do not make the mistake of judging for yourself what “form” the mercy would take, for then you are perpetuating the concept of separation. [After all,] a concept is all that it is. Instead, I ask you to notice when you judge. Be willing to extend mercy instead, and ask Me what mercy I would extend. I will lead you in your thoughts to give through thought what is most helpful at the time. I may also guide you in action, but I will [primarily] guide you in thought. Guiding you in thought without leading you to take a specific action is helpful for you at this time, because it helps you to remove your awareness from the world of form as reality [and place it on] the world of mind as reality. As you follow my guidance to extend the thoughts I would have you extend, and you perceive miracles based on the extension of thought, you will come to accept mind as Self, mind as connectedness, and oneness as the reality of mind. Within this acceptance, you will find salvation. Remember to seek your thoughts with Me in openness. It is My thoughts that you want to extend. [In time], you will come to know them as your thoughts. [In the beginning,] be willing to lay your thoughts of what is helpful aside that you may hear My thoughts and extend them. Every time you lay aside judgment and practice extending My thoughts, you help to heal the world of its own illusion. Thank you. October 11, 2005 Notice when you look at others and see them as others. Notice when you judge them as different and separate from yourself. And then rest in your mind, noticing. It is nothing to feel guilty about. It is just the observance of an ancient habit you are ready to let go of. Rest within your mind, in peace, secure in knowing that you do choose again. To rest in peace with Me is to choose again. Notice the peace within your mind, and be glad. What is a miracle and how
does it help me to wake up? Answer: Reversal cannot come from you, for you believe in the upside-down world in which you seem to be. You believe you are there and others are there with you. You believe the world is independent of you, and you are mercy to its effects. At best, [you believe] you can adapt and find some happiness. You can win, and then look away so as not to see the pain that [you believe] is not yours. You can deny your thoughts [or] accept them as meaningless. And in doing all of this, you seem to be ok, maybe better off than most, but you are never fully satisfied. You are never fully satisfied because you believe in lack, and that which you lack, you cannot find. You look for it in relationships, accomplishments, things, food, security, and good times; like an anesthesia, you may seem to laugh and be happy for awhile. But your satisfaction never lasts, so it is on to the next thing that might finally fill the lack. You can never find that thing, because there is nothing that you lack. You are complete and perfect within the fullness of God now. And this is why the miracle is helpful. It gives you nothing, because you need nothing. To give you something would validate the belief in lack. The miracle is a simple shift in perception, a change in seeing, so all that was before still can be within illusion, but the lack that seemed to be is gone. The miracle recognizes truth and denies the false. That is all, because that is all that is needed. Everything is accomplished as it was accomplished long before the dream began. And what is accomplished in reality cannot be undone, or reality would not be the truth of existence. If reality is not the truth of existence, then God is dead, and All That Is, isn’t. Yet, you know this cannot be. For you realize that you exist. This is one fact you cannot deny. You are existence, and this you know. All That Is is, because you are. So, the truth must be true and reality must be reality. And the dream that you call life must be an illusion, because it will not last. And you will [last], because you are existence, and existence can have no end or else existence would not exist. This is the shift of the miracle. A change in perspective that shows the false must be false because the truth is true. Again, what is my part in
ending the dream? Answer: Within illusion, there may seem to be others. Some may seem to be close to you and some may seem to be strangers merely passing by, but there are no differences in any of them. There are no differences in anything you experience within illusion. It is all the same. It is all projection of a mind darkened by guilt and fear denied. As an aspect of this total awareness, you have a choice. Through thought and belief, you may continue to give the world the thought of guilt and fear that it was made to hold, or you can see the world with a new purpose. This is your choice. And if you choose to give the world something different by choosing to see differently, it is something different that the world will receive from you. There are two choices: darkness and Light. You will give the one you accept. If you accept guilt and fear and attack, that is what you give. But if you accept that these are not your real thoughts, and you let the temptation to believe them pass you by, you accept all that is when darkness of illusions have faded. You accept the Light. What you accept, you give, because what you accept fills the mind of which you are one. Remember there are no differences. Remember it is all one. Remember it is all thought. Remember that the thoughts you accept contribute to the whole. Through this, to give is to receive. This is the divine law that tells you who you Are. Accept this truth, and be glad! How do I do this and live in
the world that I seem to be in? I lead you to Truth through illusions. There is no Truth within illusions, but illusions are like a tool that can be used to lead you to Truth. Do not be afraid to enjoy illusions. Happy learners have a purpose. But do not make the mistake of putting value on illusions. Do not let illusions be the basis of your happiness. True happiness comes from Me. With true happiness, there is no loss, for all things are seen within their true light as a path to the remembrance of Truth. Seek only Me, and you shall know happiness. I am your happiness, and I am within. Seek not outside for joy. Enjoy illusions, but do not seek there. Bring joy to what you do instead of asking what you do to give you joy.
